Construction and Design of Cable-Stayed Bridges Book by John B. Scalzi and Walter Podolny

Description

Thc reconstruction of bridgcs in Europc dcstroycd
during World War Il providcd cnginccrs with thc op-
portunity to apply new technology to an old concept
in bridge design, the cable-stayed bridge. The impetus
came in the 1950s, in Germany, when many cf lhc
bridges spanning the Rhinc River replaced with
various types cf cable-stayed bridges.

The original concept of the cable-stayed bridge dates
hack to 1784 but was ‘ ‘shelved” by cneinccrs because
of the many collapses oi the early bridges. T he need
to build bridges more economically combined with
modern methods of analysis, construction methods,
and more reliable construction materials provided
br:dge engineers with the impetus to develop the preE-
ent-day cablc stayed bridge.

Economic studies have indicated that thc cablc
stayed bridge may fill the void between long-span gir-
der bridges and suspension bridges. Some Europcan
engineers fccl that cable-stayed bridge may also
replace the suspension bridge in many applications. Ka
addition to (he potential economies, some engineers
bclicvc the cable-stayed bridge adds a nevi dimension
to the aesthetics Of bridge, design.

Engineers in the United States are planmng and
designing cable-stayed structures for pedestrian aver-
passes, highway bridges, and bridges for pipc lines,
despite the paucity of design and construction data in
the American technical literature.

The obicczive of this book is to bring together in
Kinc vclumc the currcnt state of the art of design and
construction mcthods for all types of cable-stayed
bridgcs so that cnginccring facultics, practicing engi-
neers, local, and fcdc.ral bcidgc cngineers can
have a ready reference source cf construction decails
and design data.

Experts in the field provide a state-of-the-art treatment of multi-cable stay systems, segmental concrete construction, composite concrete and steel construction, parallel strand stays, and alternate designs. New edition emphasizes US bridges.
