Advanced Technology to learn Engineering & Structures

A different and active way to learn the mechanics of architectural structures and engineering. Technology to train the next architects and engineers

THE OBJECTIVE IS TO ENSURE THAT, THROUGH THE MANIPULATION OF OBJECTS AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF STRUCTURES, THE STUDENT BETTER UNDERSTANDS HOW THEY WORK.

Training in the field of architectural structures is complex and encompasses basic principles of different subjects; science, technology, engineering, mathematics and even creativity, among other aspects.

Technology Name is GRASP IT BOX

Over the years, different interactive technological elements have been incorporated into classrooms that help to better understand how structures in architecture work and act.

Projectors, computers and even virtual reality form a set of powerful learning tools. But, experience suggests that some engineering concepts are still difficult to understand.

Solving problems through object manipulation, creation, construction, and development comes in handy to fill those educational gaps, and this is where Grasp It comes in .

The Grasp It box is a wooden suitcase with different interactive elements to train students in the field of structures and engineering .

The portable box is a wooden didactic piece of equipment that can be easily carried by teachers into classrooms to reveal endless possibilities for interactive, haptic, and demonstrative learning.

The set is made up of a series of LEGO-like pegs that can be linked together to form different tangible structures that can be adjusted, rotated and rebuilt depending on use. These joints can be fixed to the board – which is part of the suitcase – through the holes incorporated in it to build more complex elements.

An operation is similar to the game that we discussed in the article on how to understand the types of structures in architecture where you could even mount a small geodesic dome .

Grasp It creates unlimited pedagogical possibilities using the power of touch . The product comes with a small drawer that houses an interactive touch control and a small projector.

More Learning

With the hand and the projector we can play to observe the effects of applying a torsion or pressure on the structures that we have created, helping us to understand their reaction and behavior.

In addition, they have developed specific software with a digital editor to create and share structural simulations that can later be replicated with Grasp It.

With simple and small elements, it is possible to study, experiment and  learn the behavior of structures  (See article of interest  structural damage by earthquake ) . They can be assembled, disassembled in parts, build different structures and above all, learn structural mechanics .

As they comment on their website that we can consult from Grasp It . Currently, the Grasp It team is not for sale , but has a pilot program with the intention of partnering with different Universities .

If you are a teacher or linked to a University and you are interested in the subject. The pilot program includes:

  • A fully functional kit suitable for teaching structural mechanics.
  • A digital editor to create, share and deliver your own content.
  • 10 stand-alone digital player licenses
  • Affiliate relationship and service with Grasp It
  • Spare physical parts
  • Discounted pricing when stock product is released

The Grasp It project was created by Gregory Quinn (design engineer) and Fabian Schneider (architect and computer scientist), who aim to make learning science and engineering more effective, more accessible and more fun.

And remember that technological advances are making robotics enter the field of structure manipulation with force. We can verify it in two articles; Assemble structures armed with robots  and  robots manipulating wooden structures . Impressive!
