OpenPBR Default Material

3ds Max 2026 introduces OpenPBR as the new default material. It offers improved compatibility with industry standards like MaterialX and OpenUSD, making materials more accurate and consistent across different platforms.

Vertex Weld Modifier for Splines

The Vertex Weld Modifier now supports both Mesh and Spline objects. This allows for efficient merging of spline vertices and enables modifiers like Extrude, Bevel, and Bevel Profile to be applied smoothly.

• Conform Modifier: Up to 40% faster

Animation Workflow Enhancements

Character Animation Toolkit (CAT) and Biped systems now offer better viewport responsiveness and overall stability, improving the animation experience for complex rigs.

Retopology Tool Updates

Flow Retopology now supports up to 50 cloud-based retopology jobs per month (increased from 30). The Mesh Cleaner Modifier has been improved for easier geometry cleanup, and the ReForm algorithm processes data more quickly.

Shading and Texturing Enhancements

A new OSL map, Perlage, has been introduced for creating detailed grooved circular patterns. The Substance plugin is updated to version 3.0.5, allowing direct import of materials from the Substance 3D Assets library into the Slate Material Editor.

USD Integration and Layer Editor

The USD plugin now includes a Layer Editor for managing Universal Scene Description layers. It also supports light linking, which improves scene organization and integration with other DCC tools.
